Mets rookie reliever Joe Smith was teased the other day by his teammates for being a bit too careful with his money.
The boy doesn't have cable TV or high-speed internet access. His TV isn't even his! (He borrowed it from the Mets strength coach).
One could make the excuse that as a major leaguer, he doesn't have time to watch TV or surf the web (like some other players). Or maybe he's just a simple guy.
But he doesn't even buy his own food! He either eats at Shea Stadium, where he can get food for free, or uses the daily allowance given on road trips to buy food. He hasn't used an ATM once since making the Majors. Says Smith:
"You should see my refrigerator at home. It's got a bottle of water and a half drunk bottle of water."
Smith makes about $370,000 this year. Maybe all of his money has gone to parking tickets. Still, this doesn't make him anywhere near as cheap as Manny Ramirez, who makes around $20,000,000 but watches his phone bill and sells grills on eBay.
